Lesson 8 - Collision Avoidance
Purpose
- The purpose of this lesson is to simulate an obstacle suddenly entering the driving path of the participants, causing them to make evasive maneuvers to avoid a collision
Objectives
- The participant will be able to identify and demonstrate the proper procedure for quick, straight-line stops
- The participant will be able to identify and demonstrate the proper procedures for an evasive maneuver followed by a quick, straight-line stop
Instructor Activities:
- ✅ Explain Range Setup
- A lane with three options
- Quick stop in a straight-line
- Evade left with quick stop in a straight-line
- Evade right with quick stop in a straight-line
- Have participants start slow and only increase speed as they are building skill and confidence and demonstrating safety
- Repeat drill a minimum of 5 times for each participant
- The group of participants will complete the drill in order of stop, evade right, then evade left. After completing all 3 drills, the instructor can give random signals to each participant
Notes to instructor
- Give signal for participant once they pass the first set of cones
- Tell participants to try not to anticipate with the signal will be
- Lesson 8 is to be run in tandem with lesson 9: Slalom (moderate speed)
- ✅ Provide Instructions
- When needing to change direction or stop quickly, there are several things to remember:
- Avoid target fixation. Look where you want the SxS to go, not at what you are trying to miss
- The best stopping performance comes when you avoid skidding the wheels, so apply brakes gradually, then increase pressure. Rolling friction is greater than sliding friction . That's why we have anti-lock brakes
- One at a time, drive to the starting point
- On direction or when area is open, complete a quick stop, or evasive maneuver left or right with a quick stop after straightening Lock-arm steering to prevent "over steering"
- This lesson is being taught in conjunction with lesson 9 Slalom (moderate speed)
- ✅ Provide Demonstration
- ✅ Provide Evaluations
- Maintain smooth and precise control
- Do not hit cones
- Keep steady speed through evasive maneuver and straighten before applying brakes
- Avoid too much SxS lean or tire sliding/lift
- Respond to fishtailing with proper steering action
- ✅ Conduct lesson
- ✅ Have participants stay inside SxS until all drivers have parked (staged)
Assessment:
- 👆 How do you get the best braking performance?
