Lesson 7 - Slalom (Low-Speed) Forward and Reverse
Purpose:
- The purpose of this lesson is to teach participants to maintain control and safety margins while adjusting path of travel
- Develop precise steering in forward and reverse
- Participants will encounter front-end swing and rear-wheel cheat
Objectives:
- The participant will demonstrate smooth throttle control and steering while weaving through the cone pattern at a speed slow enough to prevent a tire from coming off the ground
- Small steering adjustments needed to prevent more steering input when off course
- The participant will understand difficulties of driving an SxS in reverse
Instructor Activities:
- ✅ Explain range setup
- ✅Provide Instructions
- Line up with back of SxS against target cone
- Begin weaving around cones
- Stop with the center of the front of the SxS touching the last target cone
- Shift to reverse gear and complete the exercise in reverse
- Stop with the center of the back of the SxS touching the target cone where you began
- Stop to adjust position within the exercise as needed
- Complete slalom in 2-wheel drive
- Avoid hitting guide cones
- ✅ Provide Demonstration
- ✅ Provide Evaluations
- Maintain smooth and precise control
- Do not touch cones except the target (start and stop) cones
- Have precise steering control
- Look over both shoulders if needed, looking over right shoulder preferred
- Keep all body parts in SxS (head)
- ✅ Conduct Lesson
- ✅ Have participants stay inside SxS until all drivers have parked (staged)
