Lesson 2 - Rules of the Range

Purpose

  • The purpose of this lesson is familiarize participants with the training range/area and teach the rules and signals, including the audible signal of a blowing whistle, necessary for safe SxS operation on the range

Objectives

  • The participant will be able to identify the boundaries of the range
  • The participant will be able to identify all of the rules of the range
  • The participant will be able to identify all signals, including the audible signal of a blowing whistle, associated with safe SxS operation on the range

Instructor Activities

  • ✅ Identify or describe the parts of the range to the participants:
    • Boundaries
    • Stations
    • Obstacles
    • Staging area
  • Failure to follow the Rules of the Range may result in a collision, injury, or dismissal from class.
  • Move your vehicle only when instructed to do so
  • Put on your protective gear before getting in the SxS
  • After getting in, fasten your seatbelt - remember every trip, every time.
  • Notify your instructor if you are having problems with your SxS
  • Keep your body inside the Rollover Protection Structure at all times
  • Use the safety features of the SxS i.e. doors, nets, etc.
  • Always watch out for the other participants
  • Do not follow too closely
  • When directed to do so at the end of a lesson, drive to the staging area and park. Do not get out of the SxS until instructed to do so
  • Driving in an unsafe manner, including horseplay, showing off, passing on the range except if directed to do so, or repeated failure to follow directions may result in you being removed from the class
  • Do not do anything you do not feel safe doing
  • If you feel sick, notify the instructor
  • If you feel the SxS lean too much, immediately straighten the front wheels
  • ASK QUESTIONS!
  • ✅ Identify and demonstrate all hand signals used by instructors during lessons on the range
    • Start/stop engine
    • Ready
    • Stop
    • Speed up
    • Slow down
    • Stage
  • ✅ Demonstrate blowing your whistle. Direct participants to come to an immediate safe and controlled stop after hearing the whistle to await further direction
